We are excited to announce this new special issue with the aim of bringing together a comprehensive overview of different aspects of xenotransplantation from a European perspective. Xenotransplantation, the process of grafting or transplanting organs or tissues between members of different species, offers promising solutions to the chronic shortage of organs for transplantation, but also raises social, ethical, and policy questions.
With this Special Issue we are inviting contributions from experts at the forefront of allotransplantation in Europe – from fundamental research through to clinical application. In particular, clinical experts will share their assessments on the current status of xenotransplantation and how they anticipate it will be introduced clinically and developed in their specific areas of interest.
This Special Issue seeks to deepen the understanding of xenotransplantation in the European context, hoping to stimulate dialogue and share expertise in this rapidly developing field.
