Biochemical and Structural Aspects of Vision Disorders

About this Special Issue

  1. Manuscript Summary Submission Deadline 31 May 2026 | Manuscript Submission Deadline 30 June 2026

Background

Vision disorders encompass a wide spectrum of diseases affecting the ocular surface, retina, optic nerve, and visual pathways, and remain one of the leading causes of disability
worldwide. Despite rapid advances in diagnostics and imaging, the biochemical and
structural mechanisms underlying visual dysfunction are still incompletely understood.

Complex interactions between oxidative stress, inflammation, extracellular matrix
remodeling, vascular dysregulation, and neurodegeneration contribute to tissue damage and vision loss. At the same time, modern molecular biology, proteomics, and imaging
technologies have opened new avenues for studying structural changes at the cellular and subcellular levels. Understanding how biochemical processes translate into tissue
remodeling and functional impairment is essential for identifying reliable biomarkers and developing mechanism-based therapeutic strategies.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions that improve our understanding of the
biochemical and structural basis of vision disorders.
Potential areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:
• Molecular and cellular mechanisms of visual dysfunction
• Structural remodeling in ocular and neuro-ophthalmic diseases
• Oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue degeneration in the visual system
• Imaging and molecular biomarkers of disease progression
• Translational approaches linking biochemical alterations with therapeutic innovation
