Soil Microorganisms as Key Players for Soil Sustainability

About this Special Issue

  1. Manuscript Summary Submission Deadline 30 September 2025 | Manuscript Submission Deadline 28 February 2026

Background

Soil microorganisms are essential drivers of soil health and sustainability. They mediate crucial processes such as organic matter decomposition, nutrient cycling, soil structure formation, and plant-microbe interactions, all of which contribute to the productivity and resilience of ecosystems. In the face of global challenges including climate change, land degradation, and intensive agricultural practices, the role of soil microbiota in sustaining soil functionality has gained renewed importance.

This Special Issue of the Spanish Journal of Soil Science invites articles that explore the diverse roles of soil microorganisms in promoting sustainable soil management and ecosystem services. Contributions that advance our understanding of microbial diversity, function, and interactions under varying land uses, climates, and management regimes are particularly welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Microbial-mediated nutrient cycling and soil fertility
• Soil microbiome responses to land-use change and management practices
• Interactions between soil microorganisms and plant health
• Soil microbial indicators of soil quality and sustainability
• Biotechnological and nature-based approaches involving soil microbes for soil restoration
• Metagenomics and other advanced tools for studying soil microbial communities
• Microbial adaptation to climate change and extreme environments
• Mycorrhizal and rhizobacterial roles in sustainable agriculture

Please note that the advertised deadlines are flexible. If you are unable to meet the deadline but would still like to submit to the Special Issue, please contact the editorial office at sjss.office@frontierspartnerships.org.
