Drug Repurposing Strategies Against Antimicrobial Resistance – Emerging Demands and Trends

About this Special Issue

  1. Manuscript Summary Submission Deadline 31 August 2025 | Manuscript Submission Deadline 31 December 2025

Background

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a critical challenge to global health, necessitating innovative and efficient approaches to therapeutic development. As traditional drug discovery pipelines remain costly and time-consuming, drug repurposing has gained traction as a powerful alternative—leveraging existing, clinically approved compounds for novel antimicrobial uses.

Repurposed drugs benefit from well-characterized safety profiles, accelerating their path to clinical application. This Special Issue aims to spotlight cutting-edge advances in drug repurposing strategies to combat AMR broadly, including novel anti-infective mechanisms, optimized therapeutic combinations, and innovative screening methodologies.

While the primary focus is on general drug repurposing against resistant pathogens, we also welcome articles addressing specific challenges such as biofilm-associated infections, which represent a persistent and clinically relevant form of microbial resistance.

We invite contributions on topics including, but not limited to:
• Antimicrobial drug repurposing strategies
• Novel therapeutic targets and mechanisms of action
• Synergistic drug combinations against resistant pathogens
• Molecular modeling and drug design
• Computational and AI-driven drug screening and repositioning
• Case studies of successful repurposing initiatives
• Applications targeting persistent infections, including biofilm-related models.
