Biomedical Perspectives on Ageing, Metabolic Dysfunction, and Tissue Repair

Background

This Special Issue of the British Journal of Biomedical Science (Impact Factor of 4.6 and Citescore of 5.8) will bring together cutting-edge research and critical reviews exploring the biological mechanisms that underpin ageing, the onset of metabolic dysfunction, and the processes involved in tissue repair and regeneration. Ageing is a complex, multifactorial process driven by cellular senescence, mitochondrial decline, genomic instability, and altered intercellular communication. These changes often intersect with metabolic dysregulation, including insulin resistance, lipid imbalance, and chronic low-grade inflammation, which can accelerate age-related pathologies such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and sarcopenia. By integrating molecular, cellular, and systems-level perspectives, the collection will aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how metabolic health influences the rate and quality of ageing.

In parallel, this Issue will explore the capacity for tissue repair and regeneration in ageing organisms, with a focus on how metabolic status, immune signalling, and stem cell function shape recovery after injury or disease. Contributions will examine emerging interventions — from caloric restriction mimetics and senolytics to bioengineered scaffolds and regenerative cell therapies — that aim to restore homeostasis and functional capacity in aged or metabolically impaired tissues. The Issue will also include translational studies linking laboratory findings to clinical applications, along with perspectives on lifestyle, nutrition, and pharmacological strategies to promote healthy ageing. Collectively, the Issue will serve as a resource for scientists, clinicians, and policy-makers seeking to extend healthspan by targeting the metabolic and regenerative processes that define the biology of ageing.
