Tardive Dystonia and Dyskinesia

About this Special Issue

  1. Manuscript Summary Submission Deadline 31 March 2026 | Manuscript Submission Deadline 30 June 2026

Background

The management of tardive dyskinesia and dystonia has advanced significantly over the past few decades, with the approval of VMAT2 inhibitors, the use of neurotoxin injections, and deep brain stimulation, among others. Despite this advance in treatment options, many gaps continue in our understanding of the pathophysiology, including changes at a receptor as well as network level, genetic risk factors, and the vast phenomenological diversity in clinical manifestations. The development of new pharmacological treatments and preventatives is also needed.

The goal of this special issue in Dystonia is to highlight current knowledge gaps as well as future directions and opportunities in the understanding and treatment of tardive dystonia and dyskinesias.

This issue will feature approximately 10 invited papers, as well as an open submission. We welcome articles covering historical, clinical, and translational aspects of tardive dystonia and dyskinesias, as well as their psychosocial impact. We particularly encourage submissions that address emerging research directions or longstanding unresolved questions. Submissions involving clinical or experimental human research that is based on hypothesis-driven questions, animal models, computational or theoretical neuroscience are also welcomed. Clinical case studies will also be considered.
