About this Special Issue
Considering the recent rise in the illicit use of opioid drugs and synthetic opioids like fentanyl, we bring together this Special Issue in Advances in Drug and Alcohol Research to better understand the pharmacology of these drugs and combat their abuse. Although opioid drugs have been used in clinical settings since the advent of Morphine in the early 1800s, our understanding of their specific neuropharmacology is limited. As we continue to synthesize new opioids, we must understand their mechanisms of action and protect against potential abuses. This Special Issue will focus on the basic science of opioid drugs including but not limited to fentanyl and its derivatives.
We welcome papers from basic and clinical researchers on:
• Opioid and synthetic opioid neuropharmacology
• Fentanyl’s interactions with other medications and substances
• Mechanism of fentanyl-induced respiratory depression
• Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of fentanyl and its derivates
• Developing therapeutic alternatives to opioid drugs
Submissions may come in the form of original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, and case reports. All papers will undergo rigorous peer review.
