AUTHOR=Eden J. , Dutkowski P. TITLE=Prolonging Preservation or Assessment of Organ Quality—What is Key? JOURNAL=Transplant International VOLUME=Volume 36 - 2023 YEAR=2023 URL=https://www.frontierspartnerships.org/journals/transplant-international/articles/10.3389/ti.2023.12174 DOI=10.3389/ti.2023.12174 ISSN=1432-2277 ABSTRACT=Impressive prolonged preservation of kidneys up to 100 days has been recently demonstrated by vitrification of kidneys at -150°C in a rodent kidney transplant model. However, extensive preservation time alone is unlikely to impact significantly on organ utilization rates, the current hot topic in the field. Any static storage of organs, regardless of the temperature and time period, have the disadvantage of very limited assessment capabilities of organ quality during storage, in contrast to dynamic preservation strategies. A combination of both procedures will eventually yield both, extended ex situ preservation and assessment of organ quality before use.
